![]() Nearing 60, Cesaria Evora has only been recognized outside her homeland Cape Verde for a decade or so. It's less confounding and somewhat less enchanting, and it certainly doesn't match the groundbreaking tremors of "Maxinquaye." It's just one more chapter in a talented B-boy's quest for musical self and soul in an ever-tenser, premillennium world. Occasionally, remnants of old- style trip-hop waft through like memories: "Wash My Soul" boasts familiar shambling beats and murmuring vocals the guitars of "Call Me" spiral in hypnotic loops, leading into a spooky, discordant mantra of "I'll wait for you/ I'll hate for you." "Juxtapose" doesn't shine with the warped brilliance of Tricky's earlier works. On "Hot Like a Sauna" (which is given a heavy-metal remix later in the album) Kioka and guest rapper Mad Dog trade yin melodies and caustic yang rhymes. Longtime muse and musical partner Martina Topley-Bird has been replaced by Kioka, another Tricky protege whose bluesy vocal style plays salt-of-the-earth to Topley- Bird's otherworldly croon. His collaboration with Cypress Hill's DJ Muggs on the Latin-influenced "She Said" meets halfway between the two artists' styles, sounding dreamy-tough as it weaves a tale of sex and death in Miami. Where "Angels With Dirty Faces" found Tricky confessing his separation from the rap's old guard ("I'm too scared to be a gun-toting gangsta wannabe," he noted in the song "Demise"), he now embraces and plays off their differences. Helping him along is producer Grease (DMC, Ruff Ryders), who infuses the album with a rowdy street flavor that pushes it far from the cerebral terrain of his first three albums. From the blues guitars and funky jive of "Bom Bom Diggy" to the speed-rapped sexual boasts of "I Like the Girl," he openly adopts, mocks and toasts his transatlantic musical influences. He's never sounded as clearheaded as he does on the opening track "Too Real," as he dryly comments on stardom and gratuitous gangsta posturing in his inimitable croak: "Some of these people have to live that life for real/ I don't have to/ I've got a record deal." Sanity aside, this is also the most American album from the musician, who was born in Bristol, England. Oddly, recognizing lunacy in the world seems to have helped the mercurial artist get his head together. Life continues on its crazy path, but the craziness is now outside Tricky's mind, in cultural contradictions, sexual mismatches and the "stereotypical, almost mythical" U.S. On "Juxtapose," for the first time, the estrangement is external. Tricky has always thrived on alienation and excelled in weaving lonely sonic tapestries. With "Juxtapose," Tricky continues the pilgrimage toward his hip- hop roots begun three years ago, when he moved to New York and recorded the EP "Return to the Grassroots." He's come a long way, not all of it easygoing: If that CD simmered with the enthusiasm of a homeboy in the holy land, this album is a travel diary recorded by a stranger in an ever-stranger land. Last year's "Angels With Dirty Faces" collected and recombined its predecessor's musical shards to create a hybrid of funk and hip-hop. On 1996's "Pre-Millennium Tension," he created a fractured, genre-blurring masterpiece.
